Mission:
It is the mission of the Clinical Trials Team to increase patient access to clinical trials for Broward County and all Florida residents.
Issue:
Clinical trials are a critical part of the process of finding new and improved treatments for all diseases. Unfortunately, not enough adult patients participate in clinical trials. For example, only three to five percent of all cancer patients enroll in clinical trials. One barrier to enrollment that is often cited by patients is the refusal of many insurance companies to cover the "routine care" costs for patients participating in what is often viewed by the insurance industry as "experimental" treatment.
The Clinical Trials Team will attempt to break down this barrier by advocating for state legislation in Florida that would require insurance companies to cover routine care costs for patients enrolled in a clinical trial – the same costs that would otherwise be covered if the patient received standard care.
