Broward County descends on Tallahassee

Scores of local officials, business leaders and community advocates are in Tallahassee this week for Broward Days.

The group will take a tour of the Capitol and participate in panel discussions on education, gaming and leadership. Group members will also meet with state lawmakers.
Participants this year include Broward County Mayor John Rodstrom, County Commissioners Chip LaMarca, Dale Holness, Stacy Ritter and Ilene Lieberman, and a number of mayors, city commissioners and school board members.

Gov. Rick Scott welcomed the group Wednesday.

“It is really important that you do this,” Scott said.

In a short speech, Scott said he is focused on fixing Florida’s personal injury protection law, reforming state-run Citizens Property Insurance Corp. and enhancing public education.

Broward Teachers Union policy director Maggie Zalamea plans to take Scott up on that promise.

“Will you come to Broward and talk to us?” Zalamea asked the governor.

“We’d love to be at the table with you.”

Scott's response: “Absolutely.”

Governor gas short attention span for Broward?

Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave Broward politicians a little bit of his time Tuesday. Very little.

His schedule showed he blocked off 20 minutes of his 14 1/2 hour day to visit with folks from Florida’s second most populous county.

Broward pols invade Tallahassee every year in an annual ritual known as Broward Days, to push local issues. The county spent $5,000 sponsoring the Jan. 25-26 event.

The Broward County Commission’s sole Republican, Chip LaMarca, said 20 minutes was enough time for the Republican governor to give “a good speech.’’

But Scott gave more time to Manatee County, and an even bigger chunk of his time to the news media.

An estimated 200 elected
officials, civic and community
leaders will descend upon
the state Capitol in Tallahassee
next week with Broward Days
2012 to advocate for a wide
range of issues aimed at
improving the quality of life
for our community.

This year’s Legislative Session
came upon us very fast and as
they all do,it carries its own
unique set of challenges. To
meet them, our 16 Issues
Teams –comprised of leaders
and experts in their respective
areas - have organized
themselves and have long
been at work defining their
positions.

It is no surprise that the
overwhelming theme of this
year’s Broward Days, “Energize
Broward– Powering Florida’s
New Economy” is focused on
rebuilding the economy and
creating jobs. To work toward
this goal, Broward Days has
joined in the local effort to
make Broward County a
certified 6 Pillars community
– linking into the Florida
Chamber’s 6 Pillars economic
plan.

Broward Days is a platform for
its teams to independently
determine their issues and
positions. In addition to team
efforts to boost economic
development, international
trade and the maritime industry,
other teams include issues
such as immigration, concerned
with the children of illegal
immigrants being denied
educational benefits; and
preK-12 education which is
focused on school funding.

While in Tallahassee the group
will meet with Gov. Rick
Scott, Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll
and State CFO Jeff Atwater.
In addition to meeting with a
multitude of influential
legislators, discussion
panels will be held on hot
topics such as gaming and
education funding.

Broward Days is an
independent, nonprofit and
nonpartisan group of people
advocating for diverse
needs and concerns of
Broward County. It is one of
the largest, most diverse
and focused organizations of
its kind, with over 600 actively
involved participants and
sponsors serving as a voice
for concerns of Broward County.
